Program Facilitators

Steve Blumenthal

As a facilitator of Spirit of Life Institute's workshops since 1999, I have helped hundreds of participants to transform their relationships and to utilize the communication tools that the institute's programs foster. Upon completing an apprenticeship with George Moscona, originator of the Discovering Relationship workshop, I trained in somatic work that honors the mind-body-spirit connection, and in indigenous healing ways. I draw upon counseling experience that began in 1972, along with ten years in teaching and twelve years with The Hunger Project in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The heart of my approach is to guide participants to rediscover self-love, create joyful relationships and bring spirituality into everyday life. I utilize storytelling, poetry, humor, guided imagery, EMDR and mindfulness practices to help people tap their unique gifts.

I founded Breath of Life Ministries in 1976 and Spirit of Life Institute in 1999 and have been actively engaged in spiritual counseling for more than thirty years. I have supported thousands by facilitating workshops and guiding people individually, or with their loved ones, in counseling. I have an MA in counseling from Goddard College and an MRE in religious education from Loyola University. I have studied many types of counseling and spiritual approaches and practices. I draw upon these as I support my clients in the unfolding of their lives into a greater and greater sense of joy and fulfillment. I now live in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where I am the director of Casa de Vida Retreat Center .

I began my own healing path in the mid 1990s, and in 2017, I began guiding and counseling others in consciousness exploration, personal growth, and self-healing. After assisting in DR many times, I started co-facilitating the workshop in 2018, more than 20 years after first taking it myself. I have completed comprehensive training in the Hakomi method of mindful somatic psychotherapy — and continue to deepen into this field of study and practice. In leading DR, I also draw upon long experience as a teacher of creative writing, creativity, and improvisation as well as a lifetime of performance, storytelling, poetry, dance and spiritual seeking. I served as poet laureate of Richmond, California, where I live with my wife and daughter, both artists. During my quarter-century career in marketing creative, a highlight was writing haiku for Google.
